The purpose of Rose City High School is to provide a variety of alternative educational strategies to students who do not perform well in a traditional educational environment.
Alternative Programs Operational at Rose City High School
High School students 16 years of age and over receive four periods of instruction daily. This component emphasizes three general areas. First the program identifies the most efficient way for the student to complete his or her high school education either by earning a school diploma, a district diploma, the GED or the State of California High School Proficiency Examination Certificate. Second, the student receives instruction in job seeking, job acquisition and job maintenance skills. Third, for students who are close to graduating, they may take 20 additional units through Independent Study in the afternoon. These students attend four classes in the morning and four Independent Study classes in the afternoon.
The Intermediate Opportunity Program is for high school students 15 years of age and younger. Program participants receive four periods of instruction daily, English, Social Science, Math, and Science. This component emphasizes discipline and work habits. Students are strongly encourage to acquire the habits and skills necessary to succeed in a comprehensive high school.
The African American / Latino Alternative Education Program, a self contained classroom serving 38 African American, Latino and Anglo students, emphasizes experiential learning and the acquisition of reading comprehension, writing, analytical and communication skills. This program focus is designed to support students in their ability to transition from school to work or school to higher or vocational education. In addition, students will be provided with career development and entrepreneurial development learning activities. Students go on frequent field trips in order to broaden their horizons and make them aware of opportunities available. Another major feature of this approach in the use of the team teaching method, in this way scheduling flexibility is maximized and there is a daily opportunity for the teachers to plan, revise and modify their pedagogical strategies with the learning needs of their students.
Independent Study Program: Students work at their own pace in order to complete as many units as possible. Most students come to school once per week to meet with the teacher, turn in the previous weeks work and get assignments for the next week. Assignments are corrected the week the work are turned in and returned to the student. Some students, who are 16 years of age or older and need additional units to graduate, will attend the regular program in the morning and participate in the independent study program in the afternoon in order to earn additional units towards graduation.

How do students get into Rose City High School
If the student is enrolling at Rose City High School because of parent request the student is allowed to enroll following the completion of all District required forms ( R.I., health, emergency forms etc.) and an individual interview with a parent or guardian. The student also needs to present withdrawal papers from the previous school.
How do students get out of Rose City High School.
If a student earns 20 units or more during one semester and has demonstrated appropriate citizenship the student is given the choice to either transfer to the students school of regular attendance or to remain at rose City High School.
How is the program funded ?
The program is funded based on hours of student attendance, three hours of daily attendance generates one full ADA unit for the students 16 and older and four hours of attendance generate one full ADA unit for students 15 and under.

(15 and younger 180 school days times 4 hours = one ADA unit ( $3,150 )
How is the program staffed ?
There are currently nine teachers assigned to Rose City High School four assigned to the program for 16 and older students one assigned to our independent study program, three assigned to our 15 and younger program and one assigned to our program for African American and Latino males. In addition there is one teacher assign extra by the superintendent in order to assist with the administration of the school.
