About Our School Programs
A modified Eastman Program is in place with students grouped for instruction in Spanish, their primary language, in eight of our 23 classrooms. In addition, six other classrooms are bilingual with both Spanish and English speaking students receiving instruction in their dominant language. Children are also grouped for instruction in English as a Second Language, and receive 30 to 45 minutes of English language instruction daily. Children become fluent in English in around three years. Most members of the Madison staff, both classified and certificated, are bilingual, and so can communicate with both students and their parents.
Our students have an opportunity to participate in a variety of special programs, while special teachers enhance experiences in art, music, and physical education. We have implemented a primary literacy tutorial program similar to Reading Recovery to ensure that each child is reading at his or her grade level by third grade. Programs include:
Many community resources have been made available for the use of the school. Needs of the students have been met through referrals to:
Enrichment programs have been provided by the Aquatic Center at the Rose Bowl, The Armory Center for the Arts, and the Bahama Bowling Lanes. Additional support is also available through Pasadena City College, the Jet Propulsion Lab, the PTA, and the Pasadena Public Library.
Our adopters, The Pasadena Association of Realtors, generously donate and purchase many items which enhance our environment and enrich our academic programs. They also volunteer on a regular basis to read with students.
Parental involvement is a priority with many parents volunteering in classrooms, our library, and health office. We strive to work with our parents to make their children's elementary school years satisfying and productive.
