Burbank School, located in the foothills of Altadena, California,
is one of the 21 elementary schools in the Pasadena
Unified School district. The School serves 678 students in grades
prekindergarten through 6. Its 22 classrooms include
bilingual classes, special education/inclusion classes, gifted
cluster classes, as well as regular education classes. Twenty
seven full time teachers are employed at Burbank School. Over
twenty paraprofessionals provide a variety of school
services, which directly benefit student success.
The mission of Burbank Elementary School is to provide an educational
environment where students are safe and secure,
fully motivated, and able to achieve their fullest potential.
The goal of Burbank is to provide a school with an academic
focus, consistently firm discipline, a lower student/staff ratio,
ample supplies, and a positive and enriching environment
where teachers, parents, students, and administrators work together
to provide a superior educational experience for each
child.
Burbank's educational efforts are strongly supported by our
"STAR" program. Developed to promote an effective
learning environment at Burbank School, the program's goals are
to improve student achievement, raise self-esteem,
improve staff morale, teach self discipline, and provide a safe
and productive school climate. Burbank teachers use the
latest research on student motivation and behavior, combined with
effective teaching techniques, to encourage students to
strive for excellence. The school program provides incentives
for our children through "STAR Student of the Week"
and
"Student of the Month" awards.
Burbank's teachers receive ongoing staff development training,
based on a yearly Needs-Assessment Survey. Using the
Comprehensive School Plan and the Program Quality Review process,
professional growth activities are planned for and
by staff members. Staff Development for the 1995-96 school year
will address the areas of Mathematics, Computer
Technology and Early Literacy.
Burbank staff members recognize the importance of parent involvement
in promoting student achievement. In general,
parents hold a positive view of Burbank School. A very active
PTA and a Parents in Education group, coordinate a
variety of activities for students. Many parents volunteer their
time in classrooms, on field grips, and by providing a variety
of support services for school functions. Participating parents
reflect the rich and diverse ethnicity of our attendance area.
Summit Education Leadership Teams and School Site Council meet
monthly to provide input for allocating resources and
funding, make decisions about the school program and to continually
address the yearly goals and objectives of the
Summit process.
